Seasonal depression is a real thing. A lot of people get it in the winter, but for die hard skiers it hits in the summer. Usually after waking up from a dream about skiing deep powder in Alaska, or after seeing videos of people skiing the glaciers in Whistler or Mount Hood.
We are located in SLC, UT. Which means that summers are really hot! Utah is a desert state. Here are a few ideas of things to do to keep your mind off the winter, as well as allowing you to enjoy your summers.
1. Hiking/ Nature Walking.
Hiking and nature walking are fun activities to keep you in touch with the outdoors. In some cases you are able to hike around the same hills and mountains that you ski at in the winter. This is especially fun because sometime you can find lines in the summer that you will try to ski once the snow hits. If you live in flatter parts of the world, you can usually find a state park or town park that has some sort of nature that is worth checking out. Pretty much anywhere you can get out into nature and enjoy the fresh air, plants, and animals will make for a fun trip. Even think about bringing some camping gear with you and spending the night.
2. Find some water.
Swimming is always a good activity to get out of the heat of the summer. There are a lot of different water activities that you can do in the summer. If you live near a lake or a river you can usually find a place to rent a kayak or even a stand up paddle board. These are both relaxing activities that second as a great workout! If you are lucky enough to live near the ocean, surfing is really fun, but at times a challenging activity to take up. (Although as you get into it, you will come to find out, waves are also usually more consistent in the fall and winter)
3. Play some Recreational Sports.
Get some friends together to play some sports. It makes it fun to schedule a night each week to play. That way you have something to look forward to. Sports like tennis, soccer, volleyball, golf, soccer, and pretty much anything that you and your friends are interested in. Even disk golf is a popular activity around here, its free most places, and gets you walking around different parks and courses.
4. Work out.
Get ready for winter by tackling a training regiment. Running and all forms of exercise will help you get ready to be the best skier on the mountain. It is also something you can do with friends, or on your own with an mp3 player.
Hopefully this will put some ideas into your head to get out and enjoy the warm weather, even if winter is your season of choice!
